WOMEN FOR PEACE & GENDER EQUALITY INITIATIVES (WOPEGEE) is a non-profit, non -governmental, non-political, non- religious, non- tribal organization. Registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria. Registration No; CAC/IT/NO 71642
The organization particularly works among women, girls and children. The body is actively engaged in empowering girls and women with skills that enhance gender equality protect and promote women’s rights. Also, it engaged in training women and girls in economic, health, educational, social and political activities concurrently with creation of awareness of Human rights violation especially violence against women and girls. It trains schoolgirls in mechanisms that promote girls enrollment, participation, retention and completion of primary and secondary education. Nonetheless, the organization is committed to promoting the ideology activities, value, ideas and principles of the Commonwealth.
WOMEN FOR PEACE & GENDER EQUALITY INITIATIVES (WOPEGEE) formerly COWON came into being in March 14, 2011, as a result of Commonwealth Day celebrations theme for that year “Women as Agents of Change”. Although the Executive Director is a pioneer member of Commonwealth Youth Organization Nigeria where she volunteered and served in various capacity for eight years. The theme motivates the founder that by investing in women and girls, she believes we can accelerate social, economic and political progress in Nigeria. WOPEGEE was formerly launched on August 25th, 2011 with a one day seminar and lunch with 40 women living with HIV/AIDS.
